Standard on the lowest trims of the 2020 Explorer lineup, the 300-horsepower 2.3L EcoBoost® engine delivers up to 21 mpg city, 28 mpg highway. When paired with Intelligent 4WD, those ratings make a slight drop to 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway.
Explorer Platinum and ST
Standard Engine: 3.0L EcoBoost® V6
Found on the higher trims of the 2020 Ford Explorer lineup, the 3.0L EcoBoost® V6 gives up to 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway. The upgraded engine delivers more power in exchange for the lower fuel economy ratings, offering a max towing capacity of 5,600 lbs. and standard Intelligent 4WD capability.
Explorer Hybrid
Standard Engine: 3.3L V6 + Electric Motor
Among the most exciting additions for 2020, the first-ever hybrid Ford Explorer model makes its debut. Powered by a 3.3L V6 engine and electric motor, the 2020 Ford Explorer Hybrid returns up to 27 mpg city, 29 mpg highway. That gives the Explorer Hybrid an estimated range of 500 miles on just one 18.0-gallon tank of gas.
When paired with the available Intelligent 4WD system, the Explorer Hybrid can tow up to 5,000 lbs. In return, fuel economy ratings dip to 23 mpg city, 26 mpg highway.
