New Ford Transmission Technology

The new technology driving the 10-speed transmission is revolutionary. Several weight-saving developments help maximize the transmission’s performance. This is the first time Ford has not used cast-iron components during the construction of the 10-speed. New materials and alloys held reduce weight, and an integrated converter/torque clutch saves two pounds.

Ford has equipped the 10-speed automatic transmission with several new technology features that optimize performance. Various drive modes, such as “tow/haul” or “sport,” will be offered that shift the transmission’s settings based on the situation. The new transmission utilizes new shift-scheduling algorithms with smarter shift logic. This adds to the system’s versatility, helping the transmission adapt to different situations.

To produce the new 10-speed automatic transmission, Ford has invested $1.4 billion in the company’s Livonia Transmission Plant. This investment allowed the plant to create or retain 500 hourly jobs.
